NEUROMODULATORS

The botulinum agent responsible for the neuromodulators used today in cosmetics, was first identified in the late 1800's. The product was isolated and purified in the early 1900's, and was discovered to have the effect of  relaxing muscles by blocking nerve communication. The resulting research results led to a product receiving FDA approval in 1989. It was used initially to treat medical conditions - such as strabismus and cerebral palsy. What they found was, these medications are also effective when used to relax facial muscles.

A common question I get asked is, "If I use a neuromodulator, will I look overdone or fake, and will I need to continue forever?". Neuromodulators simply act by relaxing facial muscles, restricting those muscles from making creases in the skin. If you were to stop using neuromodulators, your muscles typically start to move again normally after 3-6 months.
